What Is the Hardship Program Run Through the Neighborhood Health Plan?
Since 2006, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires everyone to have health insurance. If you are unable to afford insurance premiums, you can find subsidized coverage through Commonwealth Care. Neighborhood Health Plan (NHP) is one of the accredited carriers in the Commonwealth Care network.-
Types of Coverage
-
The NHP website provides detailed information about plan choices and premium options. The website features a map of NHP coverage area and a list of providers, so you can decide if NHP meets your health care needs.
Assistance
-
According to the Health Connector website, you are eligible for help or a complete waiver of your NHP premium payments for up to six months if you meet any of the criteria outlined in the Eligibility section of the Commonwealth Care Program Guide. You must reapply every six months.
Help with Co-Pay
-
You can also apply for a waiver of co-pay obligations. Commonwealth Care requires that you demonstrate extreme hardship, such as sudden income loss or unexpected expenses, in order to receive this assistance.
Unemployment
-
If you become unemployed and cannot afford your health insurance payments, apply to the Medical Security Program for assistance. The nonprofit advocacy group, Community Partners, advises that while unemployed you may qualify for a reduction or elimination of premium payments.
Warning
-
If you cannot afford health insurance, be sure to seek assistance from Commonwealth Care. If you fail to apply for assistance or an insurance waiver, you may be forced to pay substantial state tax fines.
