Riverbend Government Benefits

Riverbend Government Benefit Administrators was the Medicare Administrative Contractor for Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. On January 7, 2009, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced Cahaba Government Benefit Administrators would take over the responsibility for the administration of all Medicare Part A and Part B claims in the three states. The change from Riverbend Government Benefit Administrators to Cahaba Government Benefit Administrators went into effect on August 3, 2009. Patients with Medicare or Medicaid in the states of Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee should now work with Cahaba to handle their claims.
  1. Cahaba Government Benefit Administrators

    • Cahaba should be used for issues covering Medicare Part A, Part B as well as Home Health and Hospice. They should be used to enroll in Medicare, find rates and fee schedules for claims as well as make claims, and appeal rulings by asking for a reconsideration or a redetermination.

    Part A

    • Medicare Part A is hospital insurance. It covers inpatient care in hospitals, covering such things as critical access hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, and long-term care hospitals, inpatient care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice and home health care services. Part A covers services such as blood transfusions, nursing care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, durable medical equipment, pain-relief drugs, grief counseling, rooms, and meals.

    Part B

    • Medicare Part B is medical insurance. It covers doctors' services, outpatient care, home health services, and other medical services. Part B also covers some preventive services. It covers services or supplies needed to diagnose and treat medical conditions. It may also cover services that prevent illness or detect it at an early stage.

    Home Health and Hospice

    • Cahaba is also a Medicare Regional Home Health Intermediary. They can process claims for services provided by home health and hospice providers for the states of Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and The District of Columbia. In these states they contract with Medicare to pay home health and hospice bills under Original Medicare and check on the quality of home health care.
