  1. General Information

    • Created by the merger of Connecticut General Corporation and INA Corporation in 1982, Cigna Insurance concentrates on health care insurance products, according to ehealthinsurance.com. Cigna provides products to customers in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico and insures more than 11 million people as of 2009.

    Products

    • Cigna provides medical, dental, vision, accident, pharmacy, behavioral care, life and disability insurance. Most of Cigna's business is concentrated in large and small group insurance, where employees obtain insurance through their employers. It also offers insurance plans for individuals and families who do not receive health insurance at work.

    Programs

    • As a benefit to its members, Cigna sponsors health and wellness programs to encourage healthy living and to lower health care costs. Programs include healthy programs for mothers and babies, chronic condition management and a 24-hour nurse help line, according to Med Health Insurance. The 24-hour nurse help line lowers health care costs by allowing people to find answers to health questions from a nurse rather than spend the money on an urgent care or emergency room visit.

    Network

    • As of December 2009, Cigna's health provider network includes 612,000 doctors, 5,400 hospitals, 167,200 dentists and 60,300 pharmacies, as of 2010, according to the Cigna website.
