Problems With Deciding on Health Insurance Coverage

Health insurance coverage options are expanding for many employees. There are several reasons for this. Many businesses are offering less health coverage, requiring employees to seek out their own health insurance independently. Also, some businesses are offering several coverage options to give their employees a wider range of choices. In either case, employees should be careful when deciding on their coverage--there are several problems they may encounter.
  1. Coverage Lack

    • When you are in charge of choosing your own health insurance, you tend to automatically look for a cheap option that lowers your monthly payments. This may be good, but it may also mean that you are skipping out on some very important parts of your health coverage, or choosing a high deductible that you may not be able to afford when your health becomes worse. By choosing cheap coverage, you may actually be shorting yourself on necessary benefits.

    Small Print

    • Health insurance coverage can be very complicated. There are numerous caveats and requirements for any type of coverage, and many are buried in legal jargon and small print, making them difficult for you to notice. This means you could purchase a coverage option without realizing that it will not cover certain types of long-term health problems. Confusion is a common problem when choosing your own health insurance.

    Processing Problems

    • Health insurance processing is always tricky. It may take time to processing your application for a health policy. It may take even more time for the company to process a claim, and companies differ as to how much time they take. This can make it a challenge to cancel one health policy and move to another one properly.

    Doctor Limitations

    • There are several categories of health insurance options. Many, such as PPOs and HMOs, limit what doctors you can see. This may be a problem. They may not allow you to see any doctors in your area, or they may not include your previous doctors on their lists. PPOs tend to charge more when you see an outside doctor, and HMOs often will not cover you at all.
