Individual Health Care Plans & Diabetes

People with diabetes must be educated on their unique insurance situation in order to receive the type of coverage they need at a price they can afford. Health care plans differ by state, so it's imperative to investigate the differences in coverage to avoid loss or denial of benefits.
  1. State Requirements

    • Alabama, Idaho, North Dakota and Ohio do not have any laws regarding diabetes coverage. Mississippi, Missouri and Washington require insurance companies offer the coverage, while the remaining states specify that coverage must be included in all policies.

    Underwriting

    • Although most states require that insurance companies provide diabetes coverage, that doesn't mean diabetics will receive health insurance. Many states allow insurance companies to use underwriters for individual health insurance plans. Underwriters can deny coverage based on preexisting conditions, such as diabetes.

    Features

    • Many states require insurance companies to include coverage for diabetic treatment and equipment. However, those who do not live in such a state will need to check their policies to make sure they have the coverage they need.

    Warnings

    • Some insurance companies use waiting periods when people have preexisting conditions. During waiting periods, the insurance companies do not cover diabetes-related medical costs. Waiting periods differ from one insurance company to the next, so people with diabetes should check the guidelines prior to entering an agreement with an insurance company.
