Health Insurance Programs for Elderly Veterans
Injuries during war are turning points in many veterans' lives. Some recover from their injuries within a few years. Others have no choice but to adapt to a whole new way of life. According to the Veterans Health Council, many veterans are not aware of the benefits available today for health conditions related to military service. Veterans are encouraged to seek benefits that may be available to them through the Department of Veterans Affairs, Medicare or state Medicaid programs.-
VA Health Insurance
-
Health insurance is available through the Department of Veterans Affairs for veterans of active military service who were discharged in good standing. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, reservists called to active duty under Executive Order may also qualify. Members pay no monthly premium, but may be responsible for a copay at the time of service. No benefits are available for veterans discharged for dishonorable conduct.
Medicare
-
Medicare is a federal health insurance program for seniors age 65 and older. Veterans under 65 may qualify for Medicare if they have a long-term disability or end stage renal disease (ESRD). If a veteran qualifies for both programs, the Department of Veterans Affairs encourages veterans to enroll with Medicare in addition to a VA health plan. This gives veterans additional coverage and access to providers outside of the VA network.
Medicaid
-
Medicaid provides health insurance to low-income individuals and families, and it is often confused with Medicare. Medicaid is a state program and eligibility requirements vary from state to state. Veterans who are over age 65 or severely disabled should seek care with Medicare and the Department of Veterans Affairs before applying for Medicaid.
