How to File Insurance Claims With Secondary Insurances

When you have medical coverage with more than one health insurance plan, you can submit the balance due on your medical bills to a secondary health insurance carrier after your primary insurance carrier pays their portion or denies the medical bill for payment. This additional option is available to most Medicare beneficiaries that have what is called a supplemental or Medigap health insurance plan. This option is also available when you have more than one health insurance plan for medical coverage.

Instructions

    • 1

Review the medical bill from the provider of care for the balance due amount. Make note of the amount.

    • 2

Obtain or retain a copy of the explanation of benefits you received from your primary health insurance carrier that matches the same date of service, medical service charged amount and provider of care. Locate the field on the explanation of benefits for Your Responsibility, Co-pay, Deductible or Co-insurance Amounts. This amount generally matches the balance that is due on the medical bill you received from the provider of care. If the two amounts do not match, you can still submit the bill to second health insurance carrier for payment.

    • 3

Make a copy of the primary health insurance carrier’s explanation of benefits and medical bill from the provider of care. Complete the secondary health insurance carrier’s medical claim form. Provide the date of service, provider of care, membership number and any other information required on the form.

    • 4

Submit the medical bill, explanation of benefits from the primary health insurance carrier and the medical claim form to the secondary health insurance carrier’s address for processing. Once the secondary health insurance carrier processes the payment, it will send the payment directly to you. Submit a copy of the secondary health insurance carrier’s explanation of benefits (received with the check), original check and a copy of the medical bill to the provider of care’s billing office.
