Health Care for a College Student
-
Parents' Coverage
-
If you previously were covered under your parents' health care plan, you should be able to keep that coverage while you're in college, as long as you remain a full-time student and are between age 18 and 24. Have your parents check if you are still eligible for coverage.
Your Own Coverage
-
You may want to seek out your own health care coverage. Many companies have low-cost solutions for students and individuals who are not covered through employment.
On-Campus Health Care
-
Most campuses have a low-cost clinic on site. This is a good place to go if you get a minor injury or infection, a cold or flu. Some campus clinics charge based on income, and you will not have to pay very much, if anything.
Low-Cost or Free Clinics
-
The town where your campus is located may have a low-cost or free clinic available. If you have children, you also may qualify for Medicaid or other government assistance.
Employment
-
If you are going to school part-time, consider working full-time, if you can manage it, for a company that offers health care to its employees. Some companies offer benefits to part-time employees.
