California Healthy Families Eligibility

California's Healthy Families program is offered to children from lower income families who cannot afford personal health insurance.
  1. Eligibility Requirements

    • To be eligible, children must be under the age of 18 and not eligible for the no-cost Medi-Cal. The family must fall into the income limits and live in a family without employer sponsored health care for at least three months. Children must also meet the immigration or citizenship guidelines.

    Income Limits

    • The income amount is different depending on how large the household is. To be eligible, you must make more than the amount to qualify for Medi-Cal. If you qualify for Medi-Cal, you are disqualified from Healthy Families. For example, if you are married with one newborn, your income must fall between $3,053 and $3,815, but, if you have newborn twins, your income must be between $3,676 and $4,594.

    Immigration or citizenship guidelines

    • Children must be either a U.S. born citizen, a U.S. non-citizen national or an eligible qualified immigrant. If you are an immigrant, you will have to show proof of your status by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

    Newborns

    • Babies may be signed up for the program as early as three months before birth.

    Considerations

    • If the parents do not live in California but the children do, the children are still eligible.
