What Is an MFM Specialist?

A maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) or perinatology specialist specializes in taking care of women at increased risk of having complications before, during, and after pregnancy, including:

* Advanced maternal age (over 35)

* Chronic health conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, lupus, and thyroid problems

* History of pregnancy complications including recurrent miscarriage, preterm labor, cesarean delivery, and neural tube defects

* Multiple gestations (twins, triplets, or more)

* Placental issues such as placenta previa and abruption

* Fetal problems including genetic abnormalities, heart defects, growth restriction, and infections

MFMs are obstetricians and gynecologists (OB-GYNs) who have additional training in maternal and fetal health. This means they understand the complex needs of both mothers and babies during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the postpartum period. They are trained in the latest diagnostic and treatment methods and can often provide care for women with high-risk pregnancies that would otherwise require hospitalization or specialized care.

MFMs are experts in ultrasound and other imaging techniques used to monitor the health of the fetus. They also work closely with other specialists such as neonatologists, geneticists, and cardiologists to provide comprehensive care for women and their babies.

If you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant and have any of the risk factors listed above, you may want to consider seeing an MFM specialist.
