Health Information Systems Degrees

Health Information is a combination of medical information, health-care information and nursing information using computer science to manage data in the medical field. The medical industry has its own proprietary terms and databases. Analysts using Health Information Systems must know medical and clinical terminology, clinical procedures and legal guidelines, such as, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996, which governs patient privacy. Health Information Systems degrees prepare professionals for this demanding industry. Be sure to verify that the program is accredited and recognized by the Department of Education.

  1. Health Information Systems Associate Degree

    • An Associate of Science (AS) degree in Health-care Information Systems is an entry-level degree which lays the foundation for solving problems and managing health-care information. An AS degree requires 60 to 69 credits and can also prepare students for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification exam. Interested AS applicants will need to have a high school diploma or equivalent, minimum math and English skills and perhaps an academic adviser's approval.

    Health Information Systems Bachelor's Degree

    • A bachelor's degree in Health Information Systems prepares graduates for administrative roles in the medical field. Standard college entrance requirements must be met which includes a high school diploma. Depending on the program, students will fulfill 54 to 77 credit hours. The bachelor's degree prepares students for more responsible roles such as records management, systems management, insurance claims or quality improvements.

    Masters of Science in Health Informatics

    • A Master of Science in Health Informatics is an advanced degree for students already holding a degree in other disciplines, seeking leadership roles in health-care informatics. A typical program can consist of 45 credits. Students pursuing this degree would learn how to define health-care informatic strategies using the combinations of computers, databases, medical records and patient data. Doctors, nurses, systems analysts, lab technicians and IT professionals are the typical students who might pursue this degree.

    • Upon achieving professional status, many may wish to network with other health-care professionals to keep abreast of the industry, research and collaborate on ideas. The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) formerly Hospital Management Systems Society(HMSS) is a national, nonprofit organization for Health Information Systems professionals. It is an industry-specific organization which promotes high quality health-care through education, seminars, new technology and workshops.
