Veterinary Projects for School

We often think of doctors as treating humans only. But for those creatures that cannot communicate their ailments with the same ease that humans can, we call on veterinarians for the task. Veterinarians provide all forms of treatment and even surgery for animals requiring medical attention. Introducing veterinary medicine to a young group can turn many students to the promising and rewarding career of helping animals in need. Class projects on the subject will allow students to delve into the practice and possibly open their minds to the medical field in general.
  1. Assessing the Class

    • Depending on the age of the students, teachers should limit the complexity of the assigned class projects. Additionally, while youngsters often think of veterinarians as simply playing and magically curing the ailments of animals, they are in fact doctors that sometimes have to perform invasive medical procedures. Students may come across graphic pictures of veterinary medicine. Be sure to tailor the project to the maturity and age of the class.

    Collage of animals

    • For very young students, cutting out pictures of animals from magazines and creating a huge collage can be a very fun and memorable experience. Include some pictures of veterinary practitioners so the students can make the connection between veterinary doctors and happy animals. This project can have an extremely positive psychological effect on the class and open them to further research on the subject at later stages in their lives.

    Presentations about Veterinarians

    • Have older students research the functions of a veterinarian and present their findings to the class. Assign each student a different veterinary specialty. This will introduce them to the broad array of veterinary work as well as its challenging nature. Furthermore, after hearing each student do his presentation in turn, students may gain insight into what specialty would be most suited for them.

    Inviting Speakers

    • Invite a veterinarian to come in and address his specialty, his day-to-day tasks and why he chose veterinary medicine as his profession. Encourage the students the opportunity to write questions before the speaker's arrival.
