How to Start Independent Living Services

Anyone experiencing a disability may find themselves in a residential or institutional environment that they may no longer find desirable. Moving out on your own can seem overwhelming, especially if your medical, safety and housekeeping needs are taken care of in your current setting. Independent Living Centers (ILCs) exist throughout the United States to help coordinate all aspects of care when living on your own with a disability. Your local ILC can provide an Independent Living Specialist free of charge to navigate the complex system of health care services, regulations, care coordination, assisting technology and environmental modifications necessary to live independently.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a list of the types of living arrangements you are interested in. Some people experiencing a disability may just want to go home but need a wheelchair ramp or other environmental modifications. Other issues to consider are access to reliable transportation, medical services and ability to care for yourself.

    • 2

Find out and list your current medical and disability benefits, such as Medicaid or Social Security. This information is important to have on hand when speaking to an Independent Living Specialist in order to know what kinds of services are available to you.

    • 3

Locate your local Independent Living Center using an online search engine. Enter your state and city to find the center closest to your current location. There are over 500 centers in the USA that cover a vast geographical range.

    • 4

Contact the Independent Living Center and request an intake. Let the receptionist know that you would like to begin Independent Living Services. If you need transportation to the center for an initial meeting, they may be able to send you a voucher or arrange transportation services.

    • 5

Bring your list of independent living considerations with you to the initial meeting with the Independent Living Specialist. Don't be afraid to ask questions about any concerns you may have. Make sure to also discuss future employment, care coordination and if there are any disability support groups at the Independent Living Center.
