How to Track Disability Status

If you have recently applied for disability benefits, you may be wondering if your claim has been accepted. If you are a recent applicant, or if for whatever reason you believe your disability status may have changed, there are several quick and easy methods to check on your status.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the official website of the U.S. Social Security Administration: ssa.gov. On the home page, at the top, is a link labeled "Disability." Click on it. You will be redirected to the disability section of the web site. Click on "Check Application Status." You will be asked to enter your Social Security Number and a Confirmation Number (a number the administration gave you when you filed your application if you did it online).

    • 2

Call the toll-free Social Security hot line, 1-800-772-1213. Bear in mind, however, that the automated system you reach at this number may give you outdated status information.

    • 3

Contact your local Social Security office either by phone or in person. This may be the preferred method for anyone who does not have a computer or did not apply online, but it may take more time, especially if the office is busy and/or understaffed.

    • 4

Call the Disability Determination Services or DDS (the state agency that processes disability claims). You can get their number from the Social Security office. This will allow you to speak directly with the examiner who will determine your disability status. If the examiner has not yet made a final decision, he or she can still update you on the processing status of your claim regarding medical records not yet received by your doctor or local hospital.
