How to Create a New Protocol

Protocols are step-by-step instructions on how to perform a specific task. Medical protocols describe the techniques and procedures involved in treatment and care. A physician typically writes them. Individual protocols are written for every type of health care provider. Each contains directions on how to perform only the skills and treatments included within the provider's scope of practice.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the need for a medical protocol by considering the types of care permitted within the chosen scope of practice. Nursing departments require medical protocols describing nurses' duties. A nursing protocol would include detailed directions for each procedure, care and treatment permitted within the nurses' scope of practice. Nurses are trained to provide a wide variety of treatments, ranging from bandaging a wound to cardiac care. Limit protocols by organizing them into categories or specialties.

    • 2

Write instructions for each treatment and procedure included within the protocol. Describe in detail how to perform each individual task. Include pictures demonstrating techniques that can be used as reference. Provide a list of equipment and supplies needed to perform the treatment. Contraindications, tips and recommendations can be included. Warnings or cautions can be added to more risky procedures.

    • 3

Test the methods described in the protocols prior to their implementation within the facility. This assures the instructions are correct and appropriate. Testing provides the opportunity to make changes to improve the protocol prior to use. This can be done using computer simulation, training mannequins or volunteers. Check to assure all medication dosages are correct.

    • 4

Advise staff of the new protocol. Hold meeting to discuss the protocols. Address questions or concerns employees may have. Give them time to learn the protocols prior to their use in the facility. Train employees on how to perform new procedures or techniques. Provide the opportunity for employees to practice any new techniques or procedures. Tests can be administered to determine the employees' knowledge of the protocol.
