How to Evaluate the Success of a Company's Health Care Program

Corporate health care programs are typically called wellness programs. These programs offer additional health benefits above what employees get from their health carriers. These benefits include access to nutrition, dental and medical information, smoking cessation programs, external fitness programs and various free assessments. Many factors contribute to the success of a company's wellness program.

  Determine the cost of the program per employee. The costs of a wellness program depend upon the benefits being offered. This cost is at the expense of the company to help reduce overall health care expenses. Organizations want to limit costs, as they do not know whether it will be successful. Typically a wellness program costs $3 to $5 per employee.

  Review employee health care claim information. Recognizing the types of illness or injuries employees are being treated for will tell you what programs they are more likely to participate in. For example, if 400 employees are getting treatment for a cold or flu; a health fair for cold information and a flu shot clinic may be of interest to these employees.

  Examine employee attendance. A decrease in absenteeism may indicate the success of the health care program. There may be fewer injuries and illnesses among employees. An increase in absenteeism is important, too, as employees may not be using the benefits of the program.

  Evaluate employee turnover. An increased turnover rate may indicate employee dissatisfaction about the organization, which can include benefits such as the health care program. Decreased turnover can indicate a rise in employee morale.

  Conduct a headcount analysis at the health fairs or clinics. This is a reporting of the employees in attendance at each event. This analysis will give the organization an idea of ongoing interest in these programs.
