How to Clean Treatment Rooms

Doctors, nurses, clinicians and therapists of many kinds use treatment rooms to administer a great many services from simple consultations and examinations to surgery. Medical professionals may provide all kinds of medical and dental services in treatment rooms. Clinicians provide alternative therapies like massage therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture and acupressure. Clients and patients need to feel secure in the knowledge that the treatment room is safe, and cleanliness is, therefore, essential. Operating rooms in particular must have strict guidelines and the cleaning routines should be clearly understood and followed to the letter.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean treatment rooms thoroughly at the beginning of each day. Use an antiseptic germicide solution with lint free disposable cloths to clean all of the surfaces, fixtures, equipment and furniture. Even if the room was cleaned at close of business the prior day, it is necessary to wipe the room down in the morning to ensure that it is clean. During patient and client procedures, keep the room tidy, clean and orderly. Clean spills of all kinds immediately using a clean, dust-free cloth and disinfectant germicide solution.

    • 2

Between patients and clients, immediately discard any disposable items, such as paper sheeting and utensils. Remove gowns, gloves and other items before leaving the room. Bag all linens and surgical drapes and immediately remove them from the area. Place all trash and disposable items into disposable bags and put them in the trash bins outside. Wash all instruments using gloved hands, or use perforated trays and put the instruments into a washer or sterilizing system.

    • 3

Clean all used items with disinfectant. Vacuum the floor. If surgery was performed, use a wet vacuum to clean the floor that was occupied by the patient and surgical team. If no wet vacuum is available, use a clean mop head and discard it after use. A clean mop head must be used after each operation or surgical procedure.

    • 4

Use an antiseptic germicide to clean each treatment room at the end of each day's procedures. All wall or ceiling equipment should be thoroughly cleaned using antiseptic. Spotlights, lights on tracks and furniture, including wheels, should be cleaned using antiseptic. Clean any buckets and other waste receptacles and put fresh bags inside of them. If it is possible, place them in a washer or sterilizer. Vacuum any room with carpet thoroughly. Scrub the sinks and entire floor with antiseptic and either a machine scrubber or a large floor brush. Ensure that all of the disinfectant germicide solution used is wiped up completely. Use a wet vacuum if possible.
