How to Get Information on Preparing for Nursing Test
In order to become a registered nurse (RN) in the United States, you'll need either an associate's degree in nursing (ADN) or a baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN). Once you've earned your degree, you'll need to pass a standardized national test known as the National Council Licensure Examination, popularly known as the NCLEX or "nursing boards." While RN licenses are issued by individual states and US territories, all of those entities use the same NCLEX test and passing standard when evaluating candidates for an RN license.Instructions

1
Acknowledge the need to study for the test. According to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, the pass rate for the NCLEX was 69.9% in 2008 and 75.31% as of September 2009.

2
Identify your learning style. Some nurses want a formal classroom setting for an NCLEX review course, others like to study independently, and many prefer online tutorials. Think about what worked well for you in nursing school before starting your hunt for information.

3
Scan available options. Nursing Colleges & Training Schools offers a comprehensive online listing of free resources for NCLEX preparation, as well as fee-based programs. Narrow down your choices and then take a quick look at samples of online or print content.

Complete an NCLEX review course. Whether it's online or in a classroom, a good review course will provide you with nursing content as well as test-taking strategies. As you complete each content section, make notes about where you need to study more intensely. These notes can pinpoint topics for you to research in your nursing textbooks or online.

5
Familiarize yourself with NCLEX question formats. The NCLEX website offers flashcards, practice questions, and reviews of individual body systems. You can learn more about the computer adaptive testing (CAT) format, and strategies to improve your score. It's also a good idea to take a practice NCLEX test under "exam-like" conditions by timing yourself and completing an online sample.

6
Develop effective study habits. In nursing school, you had instructors, deadlines, and course outlines to keep you on track. Studying for the NCLEX is self-directed, so it's important to identify a regular time and place for study. Consider choosing a partner who is also getting ready for the test, so you can keep each other motivated and on target.

Know when to stop preparing for the test. It's a good idea to do some mild exercise the night before, avoid studying, and do something that relaxes you, such as meditation. Make sure you're well-organized with any paperwork you've been asked to bring, and that you know how to get to the test site. It's a good idea to have a back-up plan in case of car trouble or family issues.
