Methods for Cleaning Laryngoscopes
A laryngoscope is a flexible, lighted and magnified endoscope used for examination of the larynx. Since the laryngoscope is placed into the mouth to examine the throat, it will be covered in saliva and germs after use. Medical equipment should be cleaned after each use to sanitize instruments for the next use. Cleaning germs and bacteria from medical instruments is crucial to preventing the spread of disease from patient to patient.-
Alcohol Swabs
-
Alcohol swabs are commonly used to clean many medical instruments. The alcohol will kill the germs and the swabs are easy and convenient to use. Swab all parts of the laryngoscope that may come in contact with the patient's mouth and throat.
Antibacterial Wipes
-
Antibacterial wipes are another option for cleaning laryngoscopes and other medical instruments. The wipes are inexpensive and convenient to disinfect and kill bacteria in the medical office.
Soaking Method
-
Laryngoscopes may also be cleaned by soaking in a shallow pan of water and a few drops of antibacterial soap. The pan should be filled about half way with water, enough to cover the scope once it has been submerged. After soaking in the water for about 15 minutes, use a cotton swab to clean any cracks or crevices, then allow it to air-dry completely. If your laryngoscope is the type with a blade attachment, remove this attachment and soak in the solution. The blade attachment can be used if cell samples need to be recollected. Replace the blade once all parts are dry.
Disposal Sheaths
-
Disposal sheaths are an alternative to the constant disinfection of the laryngoscope. The sleeve is made to cover the flexible arm and is discarded when the physician has finished with it. This does not substitute for regular, deep instrument cleaning but will aid in the day-to-day prevention of the spread of germs and bacteria.
