How to Evaluate a Medical Practice

Evaluating a medical practice is an important part of the success and growth, large or small. Receiving feedback can help you to improve in certain areas of your practice and allow you to continue with the measures that patients and employees deem your strong points. You can evaluate your practice in a number of different ways -- including patient surveys, employee surveys and by observing the overall flow of your medical office.

Instructions

    • 1

Send out patient surveys. Send surveys out to your patients every couple of months. Select patients at random to receive your survey -- the number of surveys you send out should be based on the size of your medical practice. Include questions you want answered -- including questions about wait times, friendliness of the staff and professionalism of the doctor.

    • 2

Have your employees complete surveys. Create a better working environment by receiving feedback from your employees. Ask employees about the working environment, availability of their bosses and their overall satisfaction with their jobs.

    • 3

Observe the daily operations of your medical practice. Take a seat in the back of the waiting room and observe office and medical staff, as they interact with patients. Observe the friendliness of the staff as well as how quickly patients are registered. Take note of how long patients are sitting in the waiting room waiting to see their doctor.

    • 4

Use a secret shopper patient. Have a friend -- such as a manager of another practice -- pose as a patient in your office. Employees will be unaware that this person is observing, which will provide you with an accurate read of how your employees treat patients.

    • 5

Take note of how many patients you gain and lose each year. Keep a record of how many new patients your practice receives. Also, take not of how many patients have transferred their records out of your office -- keep in mind that some of these transfer are likely to be due to relocation.
