How to Prepare a Medline Sitz Bath

  Attach a hook into the wall to the right side of the toilet, securing it at shoulder height. Lift the toilet seat, and position the Sitz bath inside the toilet and over the rim of the toilet bowl.

  Fill a measuring jug with 1.800 ml of warm water. Use boiled cold water that is cooling down because this is sterile, rather than tap water from the hot tap. Use a thermometer to test the temperature of the water; it needs to be between 100 and 105 degrees F.

  Fill the Medline Sitz bath with the warm water from the measuring jug.

  Thread the tubing from the solution bag through the hole in the front of the Sitz bath. You can also thread the tubing into the back of the Sitz bath if this is more comfortable for seating.

  Close the clamp on the tubing between the solution bag and the Sitz bath to avoid water flowing into the bowl. Fill the solution bag with 2,000 ml of warm water at the same temperature as before. Hang the solution bag on a wall hook at shoulder height.

  Sit on the toilet and soak the problem area for 15 to 20 minutes. Release the clamp on the solution bag tubing to maintain the temperature in the Sitz bath. Use the Medline Sitz bath with a frequency directed by your health-care professional, commonly two to three times a day.

  Close the clamp on the solution bag, and dry yourself gently with a clean soft towel. Empty the Sitz bath contents into the toilet, and flush them away. Disconnect the tubing from the Sitz bath, and empty the bag of water. Wash the Sitz bath bowl with warm water and mild detergent. Rinse the bowl and dry thoroughly along with the solution bag and tubing, and store them away.
