The Correct Way to Use a Cane

The use of a cane can be very beneficial to people who have stability and mobility issues. Canes are also helpful for people who have a temporary setback such as a broken leg or are recovering from surgery that limits their mobility. Some people are often not informed about proper cane usage. Correct cane usage is simple once you know what to do.

Instructions

    • 1

Adjust the cane to the correct height. Stand up straight with your arms by your sides. The cane's grip should be even with your wrist. If you need to adjust the height of the cane, there are usually buttons that you can push allowing you to slide the upper portion of the cane up and down.

    • 2

Hold the cane with the hand that is on the opposite side of the injured leg. This will ensure better balance as you walk. If you use the cane on the same side of the injured leg, your walking is going to be lopsided and you'll have a greater chance of falling.

    • 3

Move the came forward at the same time as you take a step with the injured leg. When your injured leg hits the ground, the cane should hit the ground at the same time.

    • 4

Bear your weight on the cane as you take a step with your uninjured leg.

    • 5

Keep an eye out for any obstacles that are in the way. Rugs, toys, ice or loose electrical cords are hazards if you use a cane.
