Grants for Electric Wheelchairs

For someone born with a physical disability that restricts movement, having access to an electric wheelchair can mean the difference between living an active or restrictive life. Various organizations around the globe put aside money each year to offer as grants to disabled people. The overall aim is for disabled people to have as full and rewarding lives as possible.
  1. Disabled Children's Grant

    • The New York-based Disabled Children's Relief Fund is a not-for-profit organization which specializes in helping kids with disabilities ranging from cerebral palsy to rheumatoid arthritis. The organization seeks to ensure that these disabled children have access to equipment and initiatives, from electric wheelchairs to physical therapy sessions, which will have a positive impact on their daily lives.

Each year, a family affected by disability may apply to the Disabled Children's Relief Fund for a small grant towards an electric wheelchair or a similar piece of equipment. The family must apply between April and September. Alternatively, the Disabled Children's Relief Fund accepts grant applications from non-profit organizations, who can request funding to provide electric wheelchairs for use by a small number of children.

    Joseph Patrick Trust

    • The Joseph Patrick Trust was set up in 1986 to help sufferers of neuromuscular conditions, such as muscular dystrophy. One of the Trust's chief activities is to award grants which can be put towards purchasing equipment, including electric wheelchairs and other essential items such as electric beds.

Grants from the Joseph Patrick Trust are only available to individuals affected by neuromuscular conditions; applicants also have to live in the United Kingdom to be considered. The Trust doesn't offer a huge amount of money, and as noted on the organization's website, in many cases the grant won't cover the full cost of the equipment. In these cases, the Joseph Patrick Trust likely will be able to recommend other organizations that might be able to help applicants seeking further funding.

The Barnwood Trust provides grants to people of between the equivalents of $70 to around $1,200. These grants can be used to purchase equipment or other items which will improve an individual's quality of life,by helping to negate her disability. To be successful in receiving a grant, applicants must have a little income, live in Gloucestershire and have a disability that isn't catered for by the State.
