Assisted Living House Rules

Some people are unable to care for themselves and need help with basic tasks like bathing, dressing, grooming or cooking. An assisted living facility, which offers both privacy and independence, provides basic amenities like meals, housekeeping and recreational activities. Though an assisted living facility offers a home-like atmosphere, there are certain house rules that all residents need to follow in order to maintain discipline and ensure that common services are equally available for all the residents. These include rules about visiting hours, pets, smoking, telephone use and maintenance of privacy. (See reference 1).
  1. Visitors

    • Visitors are allowed to meet with residents only during visiting hours, which are usually between 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. However, times may vary. Visitors are also expected to follow house rules, so it is best to make them aware of the rules before they visit . Grandchildren of residents or any other young children who visit should be accompanied by an adult. (See reference 2).

    Smoking

    • House rules about smoking are usually quite strict. Residents are not allowed to smoke anywhere inside the facility, including all the common areas such as the bathroom. However, some facilities provide a separate area designated for smoking. (See reference 3, Page 19).

    Telephone usage

    • Most assisted living facilities do not have private telephones in the rooms. However, a common telephone is usually available for use by residents for making local calls. Residents usually must pay for long distance calls. Residents must inform facility staff before making long distance calls. If residents want to have a cell phone, they should familiarize themselves with the house rules regarding use of mobile phones. (See reference 4).

    Privacy

    • All residents should stay in separate rooms. However, a married couple is allowed to stay in the same room if they desire. All residents are expected to respect the privacy of others and are not allowed to visit rooms of other residents without permission. All residents are allowed to keep personal possessions like clothing, toiletries and other personal property. Most facilities have a secure place to lock up valuables. Any type of interference during medical examinations and private activities such as bathing is strictly prohibited, unless assistance from staff is requested by the resident. (See reference 4).

    Pets

    • Pets such as cats, dogs, birds and fish may be allowed in an assisted living facility depending on local laws. Residents must provide documentation including purchase and medical history of the pet when it is brought to the facility. The pet must be clean and free of any diseases. If it is a bird, it must be kept inside a proper enclosure. The administrative staff has the right to decide which pets can be kept inside the facility. (See reference 5).
