Parts of an Oxygen Tank

Portable oxygen tanks enable patients with breathing disorders to live beyond hospitals and sanitariums. Oxygen tanks are also used industrially, such as in welding. When using an oxygen tank, it is important to be familiar with the tank and its different features. It is essential that the user be able to control the flow of oxygen from the tank and to know when it is almost empty.

Cart

• The cart holds the oxygen tank and makes it easy for a person to move the tank. The cart typically has two wheels and a handle.

Tank

• The oxygen tank is a high pressure metal cylinder. It holds the oxygen.

Regulator

• The regulator is positioned at the top of the cylinder tank. The regulator controls the amount of oxygen leaving the tank.

Flow Meter

• The flow meter is located on the regulator. The flow meter measures the oxygen leaving the tank by liters per minute.

Pressure Gauge

• The pressure gauge is located on the regulator. It is a glass covered dial gauge that shows how much oxygen is in the tank.

Cannula

• When using an oxygen tank to assist in breathing, a nasal cannula is attached to the tank. This is a thin tube that runs from the tank to the patient.
