1
Talk with the patient about the care that is being provided. Give detailed descriptions about everything being done. Anticipate questions before they are asked.
-
2
Clean the immediate living areas. If the patient spends the majority of his time in the bedroom, make sure linen is always clean and floors are swept or vacuumed properly.
-
3
Lift the patient correctly. When uncomfortable or unsure about lifting a patient, seek the advice of a licensed nurse or physical therapist. This avoids harm to the patient and the personal care attendant.
-
4
Handle medications for the patient only after being advised to do so by a nurse. Sometimes patients are confused about medications. Nurses are aware of possible interactions and specific instructions regarding medications.
-
5
Bathe and feed patient when he or she asks. Patients are often set in their ways and want to do certain things at certain times. Allow this when possible.
-
6
Seek family members for advice. It is important to provide a network of care providers for the patient. When everyone is working toward the same goal, the outcome is often positive for the patient.
-
7
Smile often. Good feelings are often contagious. Creating a positive environment will go a long way in keeping the patient healthy.
