Palliative Care

Palliative care is specialized medical care that focuses on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness. The goal of palliative care is to improve quality of life for both the patient and their family.

Palliative care is not the same as hospice care, which is intended for people whose life expectancy is six months or less. Palliative care can be provided at any stage of an illness, even if a cure is still possible.

Palliative care may include:

* Medication to manage pain and other symptoms

* Physical therapy and occupational therapy to help patients maintain their independence

* Emotional support for patients and their families

* Spiritual support

* Nutritional counseling

* Bereavement counseling

Palliative care can be provided in a variety of settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and private homes.

If you are facing a serious illness, talk to your doctor about whether palliative care may be right for you.
