Why is there a new doctor in Doctor Who season 5?

The Tenth Doctor, played by David Tennant, did not regenerate until season 4, episode 13, "Journey's End". Thus, Matt Smith did not become the Eleventh Doctor until season 5, episode 1, "The Eleventh Hour".
