Why were people taken to kingseat hospital Karaka?

Kingseat Psychiatric Hospital was a large psychiatric hospital located in Karaka, New Zealand. It was established in 1868 and became one of the country's largest mental health facilities, housing up to 1,200 patients at its peak. The hospital was known for its use of controversial treatments, including electroconvulsive therapy, insulin shock therapy, prefrontal lobotomy, and seclusion. Due to these practices and poor living conditions, it gained a notorious reputation and became the subject of several inquiries and investigations. Kingseat Hospital began to be gradually phased out from the late 1980s as the government shifted to community-based mental health services and deinstitutionalization policies. Ultimately, it was closed in 1999, and remaining services and functions were relocated to other healthcare facilities.
