What Is the Meaning of Outpatient Scheduling?
While attending your doctor's appointment, the doctor may refer you as an outpatient to a medical facility such as a hospital for additional tests, procedures, or surgeries. The doctor may not have the resources or equipment available at his office to perform all required functions or tests. Because hospital check-in is not required for the additional testing performed at specialized medical facility, you are considered an outpatient. Outpatient visits do not require overnight stay in a hospital.-
Outpatient Scheduling
-
Take the prescription issued by the doctor to the referred medical facility. The prescription is a written authorization for the referred medical facility or hospital to perform the required test, procedure, or treatment listed on it. These procedures may include lab work, MRI's, mammograms, etc. Medical facilities may allow you to call by phone to schedule an appointment with the elected department and provide the prescription to them on your appointment date.
Documentation
-
Go to the referred medical facility and provide the prescription. The medical facility representative may issue forms for you to fill out and submit. Personal ID such as a driver's license or social security card may be required when submitting forms. Once the forms are completed and submitted you will be labeled as an outpatient. Outpatient appointments do not require hospital admission and are based on a doctor's referral and prescription.
Appointment
-
Wait for the medical facility representative to schedule your appointment for the test, procedure, or treatment. The appointment may be for that day or you may need to return at a later date.
