Ppe Droplet Precautions
Nurses and doctors often wear personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure their safety when working with infectious patients. Droplet PPE refers to equipment worn to protect against large-particle droplets, which patients emit by talking, sneezing or coughing.-
Masks and Gloves
-
Wearing a mask and gloves helps prevent droplet transmission. Always discard masks once moist, and never leave a mask dangling around your neck. Wear a new pair of gloves for each patient, and always change gloves if they tear.
Gowns and Goggles
-
Gowns and goggles are usually necessary only for procedures that involve splashing or close contact with a patient's bodily fluids. Only wear a gown once, before discarding or washing it.
Disposal
-
Properly disposing of soiled PPE helps prevent the spread of germs. Carefully place soiled PPE in the proper receptacle and then immediately wash your hands.
Considerations
-
Always wear PPE that fit properly. PPE that is too large or too small may not effectively prevent the spread of germs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In addition, avoid touching your face while wearing PPE.
