List of Philadelphia Hospitals

The city of Philadelphia has dozens of hospitals that provide a range of health care from generic medicine to specialty practices such as cancer treatment and ophthalmology. "U.S. News & World Report" analyzed 4,852 health facilities nationwide for its 2010-11 specialty rankings. Only 152 facilities ranked in any of the 16 adult specialties or 10 pediatric specialties. Philadelphia has many facilities that ranked in those specialties.

  1. Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania

    • "U.S. News & World Report" ranked the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in the top 20 in more than a dozen categories, including seventh in both ear, nose and throat and gastroenterology. HUP is part of Penn Medicine, a group of medical centers that provide care to more than 80,000 inpatients and 2,000,000 outpatients each year. The hospital performs many kinds of surgeries, including births, burn care, heart surgeries, cancer services and genetic testing.

    Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

    • The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has had more than 1 million inpatient and outpatient visits in 2009. The 430-bed children's facility provides a range of medical care including births, surgeries, cancer services, intensive care and home-health services. In pediatrics categories, "U.S. News & World Report" ranked CHOP No. 1 in diabetes and endocrinology, neonatology and pulmonology. The hospital also earned six other top-three rankings.

    Thomas Jefferson University Hospital

    • Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, with nearly 1,000 beds, admitted more than 46,000 patients and treated more than 450,000 outpatients in the 2009 fiscal year. Thomas Jefferson inpatient care includes heart surgeries, cancer services, birthing, neonatal care and psychiatric care. Outpatient services include Alzheimer's and arthritis centers, cancer screening, chemotherapy, rehabilitation and dental services. The magazine ranked Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in eight specialties, including 13th in orthopedics.

    Fox Chase Cancer Center

    • The Fox Chase Cancer Center's staff of more than 200 doctors treats patients in its 100-bed facility. Cancer treatment includes screening programs, chemotherapy, physical rehabilitation, palliative care and support groups. The center, which provides help with government services, also provides imaging services such as a computed tomography (CT) scanner, electron beam CT, MRI, ultrasound and multislice spiral CT, all of which allow doctors to screen patients for diseases or preventive measures. "U.S. News & World Report" ranked it 28th in the country for overall cancer treatment.

    Wills Eye Hospital

    • The Wills Eye Hospital, specializing in ophthalmology, is third best in the country, according to the magazine ratings. The facility provides surgery and care for patients with cataracts, corneal and external diseases, glaucoma, ocular oncology and Lasik eye correction. Medical professionals also educate patients about contact lenses, corneal and retinal conditions, eye movement disorders, low vision and orbital, refractive and oculoplastic surgeries. The Wills Eye Hospital has 70 beds.
