For veterans of the U.S. armed forces, living in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area offers resources for former military personnel in need of medical attention. In order to be eligible for most Veterans Affairs services, a resident must have been discharged from actively serving in the military under any circumstance except dishonorable discharge. Other benefits may require that the veteran served during a time of war.-

The VA Medical Center is located in the heart of Washington, D.C., just steps from some of the most recognizable landmarks in the nation. The center is considered a teaching facility and offers several services for veterans including surgery, psychiatry, nursing home care treatment and neurology. A substance abuse clinic also falls under the medical center's umbrella. The medical center has more than 1,700 staff members, and focuses their treatments to patients who reside in Washington, D.C., as well as Maryland and Virginia. Research projects supported by the VA Medical Center include areas such as hypertension and diabetes. Veterans can call to make an appointment between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Alexandria, VA, Outpatient Clinic

Veterans who reside in northern Virginia will have access to this location. The Alexandria outpatient clinic provides veterans basic medical care, as well as preventative care. For eligible veterans, health education also is offered. The community clinic is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday.

The Greenbelt location offers general medical services such as preventative services, health education and basic medical care. Health education is available to those living in the northeast part of Washington, D.C., as well as Montgomery County and in the northern portions of Prince George's County.
