Hospital Building Grants

The public generally recognizes the importance and services provided by hospitals and related facilities. Unfortunately, funding for the building and renovation of medical buildings is limited. Since those who wish to build or renovate hospitals typically cannot finance the hospital projects alone, grants provide a way for builders to come up with the rest of the necessary monies for building and renovation.
  1. Hospital Financial Service Corporations

    • The Hospital Financial Service Corporation offers the Trade Grant Program, which is designed to enable hospitals to "go green" in their building and renovation. The main focus of the program is on roofing and lighting. However, the program also supports other projects that will maximize the energy of a hospital, such as the purchase of automation systems and HVAC improvements. For most projects, HFSC will cover 25 to 35 percent of the project cost, but grants may go as high as 70 percent. Some of the grants offered are for government facilities only.

    Cancer Construction Grant

    • The federal government offers some grants specific to certain areas of treatment. One example is the Cancer Construction Grant (93.392), which is supported by the National Institutes of Health. This grant is designed to fund the renovation or building of cancer research facilities. A complete description of the research program thus must accompany the application. Award amounts are typically $1,500,000 or 50 percent of eligible costs, with matching funds required. The annual deadline is February 1st, with awards being given in September or October. Health Care and Other Facilities

    • The Department of Health and Human Services supports a general grant for hospital building and renovation. This grant, Health Care and Other Facilities (93.887), has a focus on modernizing health care facilities. The grant thus can be used to create entirely new buildings or may be used for projects such as hospital expansion. Unlike some building grants, this grant also allows for the newly built or renovated facility to be equipped. It is open to all state and local governments (including universities), but all applicants must be earmarked in the Congressional Appropriation Bill. Awards are $9,000 to $25 million, with the average award being just over $600,000. More information can be obtained through the following:
