When you go to a hospital, you might not want to share a room with a stranger. Getting a private hospital room often is a matter of luck, but these steps can help.

  Call the hospital before you go in and reserve a private room. Few hospitals can guarantee a private room because patients end up staying longer than expeceted or emergency patients take precedent. "Reserving" a private room at a hospital is just basically telling them that you want one, if available.

  Find out if your insurance covers a private room and what your financial responsibility is. Many insurance companies cover only a percentage of the cost.

  Check in on time and inquire as to whether any private rooms are available. Pay your money in advance to hold that room for when your hospital procedure is completed.
