Filing a disability claim can be intimidating. However, the process is straightforward for the most part. To qualify for disability, you will have to prove that you no longer able to work and that you will continue to be unable to work for at least one year as a result of a serious medical condition.

      Gather pertinent information. You will need information about your medical history. Specifically, you will need to provide information about all doctors visited and all visits to clinics or hospitals. Also, you will need to report all medications you are currently taking. Make sure you have a copy of your birth certificate readily available. You will also need work history information and copies of your most recent W-2's and other tax documents.

      Choose a filing method. You can complete disability paperwork online at http://www.ssa.gov/. Also, you can call 1-800-772-1213 to arrange to complete paperwork over the phone or in person at your local social security office.

      Wait for a decision. A disability claim decision typically takes anywhere from 3 to 5 months. You will receive your decision via mail.

      If your claim is denied, you have 60 days to appeal the decision. At this point, you may want to secure a lawyer to help with the appeal process. If the first appeal is denied, you have another 60 days to request a hearing with a judge. The next steps to appeal include an Appeals Council and a civil action with the Federal court.
