How to Use a Six Point Guardian Hoyer Lift

The Six-Point Guardian Hoyer Lift is a device built to help transfer patients to and from a bed or chair and to transport them for short distances. It is especially useful when the person you are lifting cannot walk or stand on her own. The Six-Point Guardian Hoyer Lift is designed both to protect the patient from being dropped during a transport and the caregiver from injuring his back while transporting the patient.

Instructions

    • 1

Get the Guardian Hoyer Lift and wheel it to the area where you need to use the lift. Locate the Hoyer lift sling and bring it to the patient as well.

    • 2

Raise or lower the Hoyer cradle to the level that you need it. Grasp the handle at the back of the lift and pump it to raise the height. Turn the pressure knob counterclockwise to release the hydraulic pressure and lower the lift.

    • 3

Tell the patient that you are going to help him move from one place to another. Help the patient into the Hoyer sling by holding the sling up and placing it behind the patient. Place the padded section of the sling across the patient's back. Place the two leg sections of the sling under the patient's legs and slide the sling up through the legs.

    • 4

Connect the sling to the lift by locating the loops at the end of the sling and secure the loops to the Hoyer cradle. Check the loops to make sure that all of the loops are attached. Ask the patient if the sling is in a comfortable position and check that the patient's arms and legs are placed in the sling correctly.

    • 5

Raise the lift by pumping the bar at the back of the lift. Move the lift to the patient's destination and walk beside the patient while you are moving the lift. Prevent the patient from swinging back and forth by holding onto the sling as you walk alongside the lift.

    • 6

Bring the patient to the destination and lower the patient by turning the lift's release counterclockwise. The Hoyer lift will lower the patient and you can help guide him out of the sling.
