Medicaid Requirements for Mississippi

People with low-income often find it difficult to afford health care. The Mississippi Medicaid program offers help with medical expenses to low-income children and their parents, as well as pregnant women, people 65 and older and the disabled. Although the program garners its funds from the federal government, Mississippi sets it's own eligibility rules and limits.
  1. Citizenship and Residency

    • Federal law requires all Medicaid applicants to be U.S citizens or legal immigrants. Immigrants cannot apply for Medicaid unless they have been in the country for at least five years. Applicants must also be residents of Mississippi.

    Assets and Income

    • To receive Medicaid in Mississippi, individuals cannot have more than $4,000 in assets including bank accounts, investments and cash. Couples must have under $6,000 in assets. Mississippi exempts primary residences, up to two vehicles, and other personal property, such as jewelry, up to $5,000.

As of 2010, the income limits for Mississippi Medicaid range between $900 and $1200 a month per person and depend on qualification eligibility as a Qualified Medicare Beneficiary or a Specified Low Income Beneficiary. People who fall under the Working and Disabled category cannot earn more than $4,579 for an individual or $6,137 for a couple.

    • To qualify for Medicaid in Mississippi, you must show proof of identity by providing birth certificates and social security numbers or immigration documentation for all applicants. To prove your income, provide pay stubs, tax return documents as well as statements of payments from Social Security, pensions, unemployment insurance, worker's compensation, alimony and child support.
