New Mexico Eligibility for Medicaid
New Mexico has many health insurance programs to help low-income New Mexicans receive affordable medical care. These programs range from no-cost Medicaid programs to premium assistance programs for those who have commercial insurance, but still need help making their payments. Premium assistance programs do not pay deductibles or co-payments.-
Citizenship & Residency
-
Most health insurance programs in New Mexico---including Medicaid, Insure New Mexico, and State Coverage Insurance---require the applicant be a U.S. citizen and a resident of New Mexico. One exception is Emergency Medical Services for Aliens (EMSA). The Income Support Division will determine if a referred alien is eligible for this assistance.
Age
-
There are New Mexico health insurance programs for people of all ages. Children ages newborn to 12 years are eligible to receive Medicaid services through the New MexiKids program, State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP,) or Premium Assistance for Kids (PAK). New MexiTeens is a program very similar to New MexiKids, but is reserved for children ages 13-19. Pregnant women of any age may receive coverage for pregnancy-related services. Women between the ages of 19 and 64 can qualify for Medicaid services if they have been diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer.
Income
-
The New MexiKids and New MexiTeens programs are open to children from families who make 235% or less of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). Families with incomes below 185% of the FPL can receive services for their children at no cost, while families with incomes between 185% and 235% of the FPL may receive services at a reduced cost. Pregnant women can receive Medicaid services if they have a family income of 185% or less of the FPL. Pregnant women not eligible for Medicaid can sign up for Premium Assistance for Maternity (PAM), which has no upper-income restrictions. Women with breast or cervical cancer need to have a family income of less than 250% of the FPL.
