Louisiana Medicaid Information
Louisiana Medicaid provides health insurance for some people with low incomes. Not all people with low incomes qualify but Medicaid provides much needed help to some.-
Eligibility
-
Eligible groups include children under the age of 19, elderly people, disabled people, pregnant women and women with breast or cervical cancer. Other adults may qualify under certain circumstances.
Financial Guidelines
-
How much you can earn and still qualify for Medicaid depends on your family size. However, people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) always qualify.
What it Covers
-
Louisiana Medicaid covers things like doctors’ appointments, hospital care, emergency room care, prescription drugs, family planning services and prenatal care. It also covers some dental and mental health care.
How to Apply
-
Download a Louisiana Medicaid application from the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals website or begin your application online (see Resources). You can also pick up an application in person at any Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals office. Fill out the application and return it to the office in your county.
Using Your Medicaid Card
-
Before using your Medicaid card to receive health care services, check with your health care providers to make sure they accept Medicaid. Some providers don’t. Take your card with you when you go to medical appointments.
