Eligilibility Requirements for Medicaid in Illinois

Illinois offers Medicaid benefits to help needy families pay for the cost of medical care. To obtain Medicaid, you must apply through the state of Illinois. You will have to be eligible for Medicaid to obtain benefit coverage. Illinois bases eligibility on the Federal Poverty Line (FPL). The figures change annually to be eligible for coverage.
  1. KidCare Moms and Babies – Pregnant Women

    • To be eligible for this program, your income cannot exceed 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). The government adjusts the FPL annually, so Medicaid uses this figure as a benchmark rather than setting a dollar amount. If eligible, Illinois will cover outpatient and inpatient hospital care. Illinois will also cover the cost of your delivery, and 60 days of care following your delivery. No citizenship requirement exists for this sort of coverage.

    Parent Assist

    • This program covers parents or caretakers of children or the spouse of a pregnant woman. To be eligible, you must have as income less than 90 percent of the Federal Poverty Line. As of 2010, this figure totals $1,380 per month for a family with four members. Illinois does not assign an asset limit for this coverage. By 2013, Illinois promises to raise the cap to 185% of the Federal Poverty Line. If you have a medical visit or obtain prescription drugs, you will have to pay a copayment of up to $3 each time.

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)

    • Illinois deems families with children eligible for TANF coverage if they meet threshold requirements. To qualify, you must meet your county grouping requirement. As of 2010, a family of four can make less than $435 in Group 1 counties, less than $423 in Group 2 counties and less than $408 in Group 3 counties. All figures represent total monthly income. Additionally, asset limits apply. One person can posses no more than $2,000 in total assets, two people can posses no more than $3,000 and each additional person adds $50 to the limit.
