How to Qualify for Medicaid in the State of Ohio

Ohio had an estimated population of 11. 5 million and counting as of 2009, according to the U.S. Census. The state also has many residents who use public services. One of the largest and most important of these is Medicaid. In order to enroll in Medicaid programs in Ohio, residents must meet the qualifications.

      Ensure that you are a legal resident of Ohio, and/or apply for residency. This requires that you have lived In the state for a continuous 12 months.

      Obtain a Social Security number. If you are a citizen of the United States, you already have this step covered. But, if you are a recent immigrant on the path to citizenship, you will have to complete that process fully before you can apply for Medicaid, unless you are seeking emergency care.

      Make sure you meet the income requirements. For children up to age 19 and pregnant women, this equals an income of up to two times the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). For families, it is 90 percent of the FPL. See the chart in the resources section for exact income levels.

    Special Requirements

      Understand that there may be certain special requirements. Older residents who wish to get Medicaid must be at least 65 years old. Also, people with disabilities can qualify if they are legally blind or are classified as having a disability by the Social Security Administration.

      Understand that women with breast or cervical cancer can also qualify if they have been screened for breast or cervical cancer by the Ohio Department of Health's (ODH) Breast and Cervical Cancer Project (BCCP), are in need of treatment (even precancerous conditions) or are uninsured and meet the basic requirements.

      Understand that certain workers under 65 are also eligible for a Medicare Buy-In for Workers with Disabilities (MBIWD) if they are 16 to 64 years old, legally disabled under the Social Security Administration or MBIWD qualifications, employed in paid full-time or part-time work, pay a premium (if applicable) and meet the basic requirements.
