Louisiana Medicaid Elegibility Requirements
Medicaid is a state-operated, federally- and state-funded health insurance program for specific qualifying low-income individuals. You can apply for Louisiana's Medicaid program at a local Medicaid office or a Medicaid Application Center.-
Residency
-
Eligibility for Louisiana's Medicaid program requires that you are a resident of the United States and also a current resident of the state of Louisiana. You must submit a state- or federally issued identification card, a Social Security card, and a birth certificate to establish your identity and residency.
Qualifying Groups
-
In order to qualify for Medicaid, you must be a member of a qualifying group. These groups include the disabled, elderly (65 and older), children (under the age of 19), pregnant women or women in need of treatment for breast or cervical cancer. If you are applying for Medicaid on the basis of disability, you must be able to provide medical records and other documentation supporting your disability. If you are determined to be disabled by the Social Security Administration (SSA), you automatically qualify for Medicaid.
Resources
-
If you are a single adult, your resources must not exceed $2,000 to qualify for Louisiana's Medicaid program. Resources include cash, checking and savings accounts, stocks, bonds, IRAs, vehicles (one vehicle is excluded), houses, rental property and land (one house is excluded if it is the primary residence of the individual), life insurance policies with a cash value and any other resource that has a significant cash value. If you are married, you are allowed $3,000 in resources as a couple before being disqualified.
Income
-
Your income must not exceed certain limits in order to qualify for Medicaid. These limits vary depending on the type of Medicaid program. Income limits for single adults for programs vary from $903 for Qualified Medicare Beneficiary benefits to $2,022 for elderly individuals in need of long-term care. Contact the Department of Health and Hospitals at 224-342-9500 to discover the income limit for your specific case.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
-
If you receive SSI from SSA, you are automatically eligible for Medicaid in the state of Louisiana.
