1
Work in a medical office or a hospital for hands-on experience. A medical office or hospital will expose you to a variety of different illnesses and conditions that will require coding. Look for positions working as an assistant to an office manager, which will require data entry, filing and billing.
-
2
Take medical billing/coding classes online or at a local accredited college. Classes are a great way to learn the basics, making ICD-9 codes easier to understand. Classes will start with medical terminology, anatomy and physiology and will move up to diseases and conditions.
-
3
Get certified in medical billing and coding. The American Medical Association (AMA) approves these programs. Consider basic coding certifications, such as certified coding specialist (CCS) or certified professional coder (CPC), to learn the basics of ICD-9 coding.
-
4
Buy ICD-9 coding books to learn the basics. Look for current versions approved by the AMA at medical bookstores. These books are very detailed and cover every disease, condition and illness medical offices and hospitals use.
