CPT Immunization Coding Rules

Current procedure terminology (CPT) is a standardized coding system used to interpret the type of health service provided, including vaccine immunization. As of 2010, this healthcare coding system is used throughout the United States, including doctor's offices and other medical providers. CPT codes compress a lot of medical information into a short code.

CPT Codes

• Providers must use CPT codes in describing services rendered to patients. Healthcare professionals use CPT codes related to vaccine products and immunization, patient evaluations, and services such as claim submission and payment. CPT codes also help to track immunization within the healthcare system.

Proper Coding

• Providers select CPT codes that best describe a particular immunization. Supporting documentation of the code must show in the medical records. To use CPT codes, you should constantly review coding books, instructions and guidelines to have the most up-to-date information, including rules used by commercial payers and Medicare and Medicaid.

Reimbursement

• Provider coding reports for immunization gives information necessary for reimbursement. Vaccine providers should bill using the appropriate CPT code unless the immunization is free through the federal government. If the government provides the immunization for free the coding should be billed as zero dollars.
