What Is an Itemized Bill in Medical Billing?

In medical billing, an itemized bill is a full listing of all actual charges that a patient or their insurance is being billed for. Most hospitals will only send patients an itemized bill upon request.

Demographic Information

• An itemized bill will start off showing all of your basic demographic information, such as your name and address. It will not list private identifying information such as Social Security numbers.

Basic Medical Information

• The itemized bill will show when you were at the hospital and the account number given to you when you came in. It will not show neither the reason you came to the hospital, nor your diagnosis code.

Payment Area

• The itemized bill will have an area you can rip off to mail in with your payment. It will be either at the top or the bottom of the bill.

Itemized Charges

• A list of every procedure, supply or medication you've been charged will be listed, along with the prices. If a procedure is considered confidential, such as HIV testing, the description won't say that, but will indicate in some other fashion that a test or procedure was performed.

Activity Information

• Some itemized bills will show any activity that has occurred on the account. This might include payments, adjustments or statements showing the process a billing department went through in trying to get the claim paid.
