Australian doctors expect near perfection and will not tolerate a poorly typed report. Even if you have experience in the medical field you may be surprised how difficult medical coding is. However, once you succeed in working as a medical transcriptionist you can earn a large income along with having freedom to work where you want due to the high demand in Australia for MT's.

  Get an education. Take courses in a college or university that will help you develop high level skills for a medical transcriptionist MT). In Australia the clinics, doctors, and hospitals expect the MT to be extremely accurate with an extremely low tolerance with innacuracy. Take courses online as well.   Become certified as an accredited MT. To do this you will need to pass exams given by the Australian Medical Association.

  Decide to work either freelance or with a hospital. You can work as an independent contractor, but by doing so you will need to be certain to keep yourself current on the latest encryption technology. However, the Australian Privacy Act prohibits confidential medical information taken off-site from a hospital or clinic. This can make it difficult for a freelance transcriptionist to keep updated with current coding.

  Get on the job training. If you ask MTs that are working in a clinic, they may allow you to watch them work and you can offer some of your time for free.
