What are the license requirements for doctors in Tennessee?
To practice medicine in Tennessee, a physician must obtain a license from the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners (BOME). The BOME is responsible for regulating the practice of medicine in Tennessee and ensuring that all physicians meet the necessary qualifications.
Education Requirements
The first step to obtaining a medical license in Tennessee is to complete an accredited medical school program. The BOME requires that all applicants for licensure have graduated from an accredited medical school in the United States or Canada.
Examination Requirements
After completing medical school, applicants for licensure must pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). The USMLE is a three-step examination that tests a physician's knowledge of the basic sciences, clinical sciences, and patient management.
Residency Requirements
In addition to passing the USMLE, applicants for licensure must also complete a residency training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The BOME requires that all applicants for licensure have completed at least three years of residency training.
Other Requirements
In addition to the above requirements, applicants for licensure must also:
* Be at least 18 years of age
* Be of good moral character
* Be physically and mentally fit to practice medicine
* Have not been convicted of a felony or crime involving moral turpitude
License Renewal
Medical licenses in Tennessee must be renewed every two years. To renew a license, physicians must complete 50 hours of continuing medical education (CME) every two years. CME courses must be approved by the BOME and cover topics that are relevant to the physician's practice of medicine.
Out-of-State Physicians
Physicians who are licensed to practice medicine in another state may be eligible to obtain a license in Tennessee by endorsement. To qualify for licensure by endorsement, physicians must:
* Have a valid medical license from another state
* Have passed the USMLE or an equivalent examination
* Have completed an ACGME-accredited residency training program
* Meet all of the other requirements for licensure in Tennessee
