How to Find a Doctor in Another State

Finding a doctor in another state can be challenging, especially when you don't know the region very well. Whether you're moving or traveling, you will need to find a doctor who shares your medical philosophy and understands your concerns. It's important to find a new doctor who you mesh with. Luckily, there are databases and directories available that list doctors. However, getting personal recommendations is often the most reliable way to find someone you like.

Instructions

Ask for a referral. Your current doctor will have access to the names and practices of doctors located in another state. He or she may be able to give you a recommendation to make the process easier. If you have family or friends in that state, ask them for the names of their doctors. Mention their names when contacting the doctor.

Contact your health insurance company. Many have online directories to help you find a doctor or hospital that participates in your plan.

    • 3

Check with the state's medical board. All licensed doctors are registered with the board. Medical boards provide phone numbers and some have the information online. See Resources for a list of state medical boards.

    • 4

Call a hospital in the particular state. Ask the staff for doctors they recommend in the specific specialty you are looking for, such as orthopedics or oncology. Since doctors and hospitals work together, they should be able to recommend the best.

    • 5

Arrange an initial meeting with the doctor. This should be a visit in his office, not a medical exam. Discuss your health history with him along with any concerns or care practices that you prefer. Ask to see his credentials. Choose him only if you feel absolutely comfortable with him and his medical philosophy.
