How to Put on Surgical Gloves

No doubt about it, putting on surgical gloves can be a tricky situation, depending on several factors. One of the best ways to prevent difficulties is to don disposable surgical gloves that are the proper size for your hand. Surgical gloves come in a multitude of sizes from small, medium and large to numbered sizes like shoes. It is extremely difficult to perform certain tasks wearing the wrong size gloves. Here are some helpful tips.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands before donning surgical gloves whenever possible. Pull a surgical glove out of the glove dispenser with one hand. Most people start by holding the glove in their non-dominant hand.

    • 2

Holding the glove by the open edge with the fingers of your non-dominant hand, make sure that the glove is facing the right direction to facilitate the thumb without fumbling.

    • 3

Slide your opposite hand into the base of the glove, fingers spread slightly apart. Make sure that you find each opening with the tips of your fingers before you push your hand all the way in. Wriggle your fingers slightly to make sure that the glove is seated firmly and comfortably.

    • 4

Pull another glove out of the glove dispenser and repeat the process with the other hand.

    • 5

Examine the gloves to make sure that there are no holes or tears prior to contact with a patient or any surface.
